Literary Journals

I’ve assisted with a wide range of literary journals, from the Reed College Creative Review to Ploughshares, serving a number of functions for each. I have done layout and copy editing, managed the solicitation and evaluation of submissions, and assisted with planning events. I look forward to the opportunity to work with some innovative journals in the future.

Ploughshares

I was present for the beginning of Ploughshares’ web redesign and rebranding, which culminated in a new look and new site in summer and fall 2009. I served as the media intern for this prestigious literary journal, assisting in a critical evaluation of the existing website and launching a strong friend/fan/follower base on Facebook and Twitter. Ploughshares is making strong strides in social media and I’d like to think I helped create a framework to help found these efforts. I continued to evaluate poetry and fiction submissions for the journal for several months after my internship was completed.

Redivider

After noticing that the artwork paled in comparison to the writing published in Emerson’s graduate student–run journal, I decided to join the art staff in hopes of improving the content. I scoured local art shows and galleries to solicit submissions, some of which ended up in the magazine (one of my favorite examples being Gary Duehr’s Field series). I think the art began an upward trajectory—hopefully thanks, in part, to my work.

Fringe

Fringe is an online-only journal run by many fellow Emerson College graduates. I did a little bit of submission reading for them back in the day. I’m a big fan of Fringe’s online-only approach.

American Short Fiction

I worked briefly with American Short Fiction, which is known for its cutting-edge content. I catalogued submissions for evaluation by panels of authors and compiled background information for grant proposals.

Burnside Review

I helped with the layout and copy editing for this Portland-based poetry journal, named for the city’s famed Burnside street and bridge.

2 Gyrlz Quarterly

I interviewed artists and copy edited content for this offbeat collection of creative work, now called New Oregon Arts and Letters.

Reed College Creative Review

I helped in the relaunch of this journal of student work from my undergraduate alma mater. I may have even had a few pieces published in it. Not that I was on the boards selecting these pieces or anything.
